Poi Explained | Cultural Refresh

Kapahaka sisters Gracie & Kimaia Kōpua tell us about the poi and why it’s significant in Maori culture.

“POI” is the Maori word for “ball” on a cord. Many years ago the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand used it to increase their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination.

‘Cultural Refresh’ is a series that explores Moana cultural practices and taonga, presented for our new generations of young Pasifika people.
