Poi dancing is part of Maori cultural tradition. So poi spinning that we do and those who perform it outside Newzealand are no longer a Maori culture this is the reason why we called it modern poi spinning. But on this video we also wanted to share to the world that in the Philippines we also have a traditional dance that involve twirling, spinning swaying a glass wrapped in a piece of cloth. So this is a information that is not known to the poi community so this also the purpose why we created this content. Aside teaching how to spin poi and how it can helpa person physically ang mentally.
Poi history
The art of spinning poi originated with the Maori people of New Zealand. It is not known when poi dancing was created by the Maori, but it pre-dates their first contact with Europeans in the early 1800s and likely goes back to as far as 1500 A.D..
The Poi was used, many years ago, by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand to increase their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination. Wahine (female) dancers perform the Maori Poi, a dance performed with balls attached to flax strings, swung rhythmically.
Oasiwas history (Philippines version of spinning, swaying dance)
Pandango Oasiwas is a Spanish Fandango dance with its origins coming from the fishing town of Lingayen in Pangasinan. Following their good catch, the fishermen will usually celebrate by drinking wine and dancing, and by swinging and circling with the lighted lamps on the hands of the dancers. The graceful & lively moves of the dancers gave the name ‘Oasiwas‘ which in the local dialect is known as ‘swinging‘.
