Learning to initiate movement from different parts of your body is a really essential part to learning how to dance with a prop, especially poi. Dancing effectively is contingent upon being able to identify where you’re initiating movement from and shifting that point to different parts of your body.
Here I cover a simple exercise to begin to learn to initiate movement from different parts of your body and how to apply it to poi spinning. Also: a few examples of this in action to demonstrate its effectiveness in performance and writing choreography.
